Dressing for Your Body Type

Body Type Measurements
How to Measure Your Body Type

Have you ever seen a dress on someone and thought, "Girl, where did you get that?" You order it, try it on, and it looks frumpy on you? Yes, me too. That's because her body type doesn’t match yours. It sucks, but hey, we aren't all built the same.

Understanding your body shape is essential for choosing clothes that make you look and feel fabulous. Female body shape is based mostly on genetics and your skeletal structure. While you can adjust your body shape a bit with exercise and hormone levels, for the most part, it is pre-defined by your skeletal structure and your predisposed fat and muscle distribution. So, work WITH your body shape instead of against it.

How to Determine Your Body Type

If you struggle with figuring out which body type is your shape, you can measure your hips, waist, and shoulders to get an exact placing. Here's how:

Shoulders

Start at the tip of one shoulder and measure in a circle all the way around to your other shoulder. Keep the measuring tape high up around your shoulders so it almost slips off. You may need to have someone help you take this measurement.

Bust

Take the measurement at the fullest point of your bust. Make sure that the tape is not too tight. You should be able to inhale and exhale freely as the measuring tape is wrapped around.

Waist

Measure your waist at the narrowest portion just above your navel.

Hips

For your hip measurement, stand up straight and wrap the tape measure around the widest part of the hips as viewed from the side.
